At New Trier one of the main concerns that parents and students have is grades. I have never heard of a student coming home and a parents asking their child if they thought that they were happy with the progress that they made in learning that day. All parents ask is if they got a good grade on that days test, or if their grade went up in a certain class because it would raise their GPA.

All of this concern and the high value of grades puts students at a higher stress level and causes them to have poorer mental health and not think straight all the time. If you click Here you will be guided to a real life example of what grades are doing to real life students stress levels.

Valuing grades at such a high level is a negative thing when taken to the extreme. As said in the above link a certain amount of stress is motivating for a person to get things done, but too much is overwhelming and not good for your health.

The value of grades can be a positive thing, but when taken to the extreme can become a negative impact on your life.

  1. Hello! My name is Ms. Blair and I have been observing your classroom for the past few weeks. I will also be student teaching in your class this winter. I look forward to getting to know you and your classmates throughout this school year!

We generally think of community values as positive: they provide a guide to interacting with others and reflect the unique identity of a community. However, your post illustrates that values can actually cause harm to the members of the community; in this case, valuing grades leads to high levels of stress. Can you think of any other situations where values result in negative outcomes?
